Case study

Ecofit is a physical activity research project aimed at improving the health of the Australian population by encouraging strength and aerobic training both indoors and outdoors using free park gym equipment. Developed in collaboration with local councils and funding bodies, the app is designed to be accessible to anyone, anywhere. While the first version of Ecofit was launched in 2016, the Ecofit team engaged Headjam in 2023 to develop a new version, a flexible, custom-built mobile and web app that serves both research participants and fitness enthusiasts, offering tailored experiences to promote better health outcomes.

Background

Ecofit is a program developed by the University of Newcastle, designed to motivate adults to engage in more strength-training and aerobic exercises indoors and outdoors. Launched in collaboration with the University in 2016, Headjam has been involved in the evolution of Ecofit, from its initial phase to this second iteration, which now addresses the needs of both the general public and participants in a Type 2 diabetes research study.

The program, led by Dr. Ron Plotnikoff, leverages smartphone technology, local outdoor gyms, and indoor workout options to make physical activity more accessible. The Ecofit team is currently focusing on two key research areas: the general public and Type 2 diabetes research participants. The new Ecofit app aims to enhance user engagement by encouraging more people to use both outdoor fitness equipment in local parks and indoor workout options.

Objective

Motivating the Australian population to engage with the app as a tool for better health.

Target Audience

General Australian population looking to improve their physical activity.

Consumer Proposition

Free fitness for all.

Desired Consumer Response

“I love that there are workouts here for anyone, anywhere.”

Creative Solution

To ensure the Ecofit app was suitable for both the general public and Type 2 diabetes research participants, we needed to create a solution that was both user-friendly and flexible. While the previous iteration was geared toward the general population, this new version had to consider an older demographic with Type 2 diabetes in rural or remote areas. Recognising that some participants might be older and not be as tech-savvy, we focused on designing a clean, simple user interface that retained the existing branding while incorporating updated features.

We had to address specific research requirements, such as the need to organise users into groups and send tailored notifications and surveys based on which group they belong to. The surveys needed to be optional to meet the University of Newcastle's ethics standards, and the app had to be capable of mapping user IDs with REDCAP data for research purposes.

As part of the app’s flexibility, the primary goal was for the Ecofit team to be able to easily add new exercises and equipment as needed. A key aspect of the app's development was in the creation of content. One of the most fulfilling aspects of our involvement in this project has been the creation of over 100 exercise videos, produced in collaboration with a personal trainer to guide users through the workouts and curated a YouTube playlist with multiple options for each exercise. These videos are a key feature of the app, offering users step-by-step guidance on their fitness journey.

In terms of functionality, we implemented a range of features to enhance the user experience, including screens for loading, login, and sign-up, a baseline survey form for onboarding, and a workout builder that allows users to create tailored indoor and outdoor workouts. The app also includes features for logging sessions, tracking progress, setting SMART goals, and accessing an information repository about the research.

To support the app, we developed a website to promote the project, showcase introductory and marketing videos, and provide research resources. Additionally, we created print materials, including flyers for the research study and stickers for outdoor gym equipment, guiding individuals to download the app and access exercise instructions for the equipment.

Evaluation

Ecofit’s partnership with Lake Macquarie City Council and Newcastle City Council includes 16 parks in the Lake Mac and Newcastle area with a total of 142 pieces of equipment.

We are really encouraged by the potentiality of this to be upscaled… because it appears that people are really quite happy with the app and the program.
