Setup your signature in MacMail

Headjam will have supplied you with two files for setting up your signature in Mac Mail. One is a .HTML file - this is simply to show you how the email should look once we've gone through the steps below. The second file is a .TXT file - we will use this file as part of the setup process in Step Five.

Step One

  1. Open Mac Mail
  2. Click 'Mail'
  3. Click 'Preferences'.

Step Two

  1. Click 'Signatures'
  2. Click the plus icon (+) to add a new signature and name it.
  3. Write your name in the third column.
  4. Click and drag the new signature from the second column to the email account you want to associate the signature with.

In this example, we've create a new signature called "Signature #4", which only contains "Ben". We are adding it to the "Support Headjam" email account.

Step Three

To being the next step, we need to completely close Mail. Click 'Mail' and 'Quit Mail' to do this. Then:

  1. Click your 'Finder' icon.
  2. Click 'Go' and select 'Go to Folder' from the drop down menu.
  3. Copy and paste this line into the window that appears (minus the quotation marks): "~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/Signatures"
  4. Click 'Go'

Step Four

In the folder that appears, you should see a series of files, some ending in '.mailsignature'. For example, "8FE16315-EAB5-40BC-A11F-65897ADF99D8.mailsignature".

You will have one '.mailsignature' file for every signature on your 'Mail'.

  1. Click this icon to ensure you can see the 'Date Modified' column in Finder.
  2. Click 'Date Modified' to sort list by most recently modified.
  3. There should be a file ending in '.mailsignature' near the top, with a modify date of "Today".
  4. Right-click this file, select 'Open With' and click 'Other...'
  5. Scroll down the list that appears until you find 'Text Edit' - select this and click 'Open'.

Step Five

Now that you've got that file open, navigate to where you downloaded the .TXT file that Headjam provided. Right-click this .TXT file and click 'Open With' and select 'Other...'. Just like we did with the .mailsignature file, open this file in Text Edit.

  1. Select the Text Edit window with the .TXT file open. Select everything that appears and copy it (Command + C).
  2. Select the Text Edit window with the .mailsignature file open. It should appear similar to the example pictured.
  3. IMPORTANT: Don't touch any code before the line that starts with "<body"
  4. Select everything from the "<body" line onwards, as pictured.
  5. Press 'Command + V' to paste in the content we copied earlier.
  6. Save and close both Text Edit documents.

Step Six

Open your Mac 'Mail' client again and repeat the steps in "Step One" to navigate back to your 'Signatures'. Select the the signature we started setting up in Step Two.
Important: in the 'Signature' view, the signature may look a little skewed.

Check your details are correct (name, phone number, email etc). If you need to edit your email address, be sure to double-check the link is going to the right place by clicking 'Link' and 'Edit Link'.

If all is correct, close the window and compose an email to test your new signature! Click the 'Signature' button and select your newly-created signature from the drop down.
